The Spirit Of Volunteerism

There are a lot of things that I had never could’ve done if it weren’t for the quarantine. I have never really struggled socially as I am a man of the cave. I am an established introvert, well not that extremely because I still go out with friends BUT only with selected friends. I’m picky per se. I abhor bullshit friendships, I see toxicity or something that makes me dislike them, boom, minimal contact. Anyway, I don’t block people, they are the way they are and I am who am. Back to the topic at hand, being stuck in the house in my room all day is butter-smooth easy for me. But with the lack of activity I found myself restless. I sought things that can make me go out of my cave and thus the opportunity came to be a volunteer. Our barangay needed to bolster it’s Covid Response Team, so volunteers from different sitios (local community sectors) are being authorized to conduct local checkpoints that help enforce the wearing of masks, and to check if they have the issued quarantine passes.

I was very excited to engage in these kind of activities because it gave me an opportunity to become useful for once in the community and also to satisfy my thirst to go outside. With excitement on the way comes my skepticism about myself. I am a bit complacent especially when I get the hang of something and that could be fatal when because of that I get that pesky virus and boy oh boy I do not want that! There’s a lot of vulnerable persons inside our compound and the last thing that could’ve happened is I might infect them too. As our friendly neighborhood superhero’s dead uncle once said: “With great power comes great responsibility”.

Our days of service spanned three whole months with a little social-distanced get together as a commemoration of our small deed. All things must come to an end but only for our local work because after being out of action, another opportunity came. This time it’s bigtime! But that will be for another blog so cheerio! Stay safe out there folks and don’t forget to wash your hands and stay hydrated!
